New Post-Las Vegas Dana Loesch NRA Ad Stokes Violence
Though conservative pundits decried anyone attempting to engage in discussion of sensible gun control measures in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre just under three weeks ago, a new NRA advertisement featuring conservative fearmonger Dana Loesch appears to stoke the very political tensions that have led to violence over the last few months. The ad follows a similar video re-released in June that also appeared not only to condone, but to encourage violence against progressives, protesters, people of color and groups disproportionately killed by police for non-violent offenses.
Over the course of the sixty-second video, Loesch says (in a foreboding, ominous voice):
We are witnesses to the most ruthless attack on a president and the people who voted for him – and the free system that allowed it to happen – in American history. From the highest levels of government to their media, universities and billionaires, their hateful defiance of his legitimacy is an insult to each of us. But the ultimate insult is they think we’re so stupid that we’ll let them get away with it. These saboteurs slashing away with their leaks and sneers, their phony accusations and gagging sanctimony drive their daggers through the heart of our future, poisoning our belief that honest custody of our institutions will ever again be possible. So they can then build their utopia from the ashes of what they burned down. No, their fate will be failure and they will perish in the political flames of their own fires. We are the National Rifle Association of America and we are freedom’s safest place.
Where to begin?
Aside from the use of the us-versus-them mentality throughout the video (particularly in the ownership of American institutions, rights and freedoms), Loesch manages to paint a picture of a world where the government’s conservative majority is the real the victim of protesters and naysayers engaging in constitutionally-protected free speech (the amendment the NRA always seems to forget as they’re screaming about the second one).
Add to that stock footage of protests and riots as Loesch demonizes literally everyone who does not support Donald Trump from the press to left-leaning protesters and the picture is clear: the NRA wants their perceived enemies to “perish” (in the flames of their own fires, wink-wink).
This video comes out the same day that neo-Nazi protesters in Florida opened fire on protesters at Richard Spencer’s white nationalist speech in in Gainesville. Before shooting at the group of people, the three men “threatened the group, making Nazi salutes and shouting chants about Hitler” according to police.
This ad follows the June controversy where Loesch argued “the only way we save our country and our freedom is to fight this violence of lies with a clenched fist of truth” – a call to action viewed by many as incitement to violence.
Her latest venture into hate speech appears to continue that legally questionable message.
