Kris Crawford (R-SC): ” It is Good Politics to Oppose the Black Guy in the White House”
By Tim Peacock
|Rep. Kris Crawford
When he spoke to the Charleston Regional Business Journal in January, South Carolina Republican state House Representative Kris Crawford probably didn’t think much of it when he said, “The politics are going to overwhelm the policy. It is good politics to oppose the black guy in the White House right now, especially for the Republican Party.” He’s learning an important lesson about politics this week – mainly, even if the mainstream media originally misses your egregious, inappropriate comments when they happen, they’ll dig it up eventually.
The remark came during a discussion about ACA Medicaid expansion in South Carolina, and how Republicans would probably oppose the expansion on principle since President Obama supported it – even if it meant harming thousands of their constituents.
Part of the reason Crawford’s remarks have resurfaced this week is the actual vote on the expansion he discussed several weeks back. As expected, the expansion failed after the vote split along party lines
. And even though Crawford – who happens to be an emergency room doctor – originally supported the expansion that would help half a million South Carolina citizens, he ended up voting with his fellow Republicans against the legislation. I suppose it was just good politics
