House GOP Member Blames Gun Violence on Welfare Mothers

Representative James Lankford (R) from Oklahoma
Rep. James Lankford

Remember back during the presidential debates when candidate Romney blamed single mothers for all the violence in the United States? It looks like a congressional Republican is once again picking up that torch and carrying it into the current gun control debate. In a meeting with his constituents recently, Representative James Lankford (R) from Oklahoma blamed the children of “welfare moms” for the violence around the nation. In answering a question from one of his constituents about Social Security disability fraud, Lankford attempted to tie welfare mothers, their families, and “being poor” as the “real” cause of all the violence:

Constituent: My question is regarding the guns and is Washington at all aware of the psychotropic drugs that these children are taking? I guarantee it 100% that’s our big problem.

Lankford: I agree with that. I think there’s a bunch of issues that, quite frankly, most liberals are afraid to talk about. [snip]

Where are we on all those psychiatric drugs? We’ve over-medicated kids. Quite frankly some of the over-medication of kids are because welfare moms want to get additional benefits and if they can put them on SSI through maintenance drugs, they can also put them on Social Security disability and get a separate check. That is wrong on every single level. Not only is it fraudulent to the government, but it also tells a kid with great potential, “don’t try because you’re disabled.”    [emphasis mine]

Even if every single person Lankford mentioned in his answer went out and committed a gun crime, that number would not begin to scratch the surface when it comes to the number of gun-related homicides and mass shootings across the nation each year. For instance, in 2011 only 4,600 cases of SSI fraud were investigated – and much of that had nothing to do with “drug use” or violence so much as lying about marital status, stealing someone’s benefits after they died, etc. Meanwhile, thousands more people than even the highest SSI fraud number are killed annually due to gun violence. It’s appalling the lengths gun advocates are going to in order to avoid an honest conversation on how to solve the gun violence problem we face.
